Asymptotic decorrelation of between-Scale Wavelet coefficients Abstract: In recent years there has been much interest in the analysis of time series using a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) based upon a Daubechies wavelet filter.

The relationship between decorrelation time and different scattering components. 1. A correlation matrix conveniently summarizes a dataset. A correlation matrix is a simple way to summarize the correlations between all variables in a dataset. For example, suppose we have the following dataset that has the following information for 1,000 students: It would be very difficult to understand the relationship between each It has been observed magnitudes of wavelet coefficients are highly correlated, both across the scale and at neighboring spatial locations. In this paper we present a wavelet folding technique, which folds wavelet coefficients across the scale and removes the across-the-scale dependence to a larger extent. It is a measure of the average spatial extent or coherence of the fluctuations. For a particular point in the flow, the magnitude of the integral length scale is a function of the not just the quantity correlated but on the direction of separation as well depending on which directional correlation is used. The decorrelation time and length scales are computed from the decay slope of the near‐inertial peak and the spatial coherence in the near‐inertial frequency band, respectively. Decorrelation time scales of clockwise near‐inertial motions increase from 2 days nearshore (within 30 km from the coast) to 6 days offshore, and their length scales increase from 30 to 90 km seaward possibly due to coastal inhibition.

While a positive bias occurs when the ensemble size is too small, the standard deviation of the length‐scale estimation is shown to be the main influence on the estimation error. The spatial structure of sampling noise is then diagnosed, and effects of spatial filtering techniques on the bias and standard deviation are illustrated.

In the context of dynamical studies, the decorrelation scale is used as a measure of the scale of prevailing phenomena and used to relate dynamical processes with the observed signals (e.g., Stammer, 1997; Ito et al., 2004; Kim and Kosro, 2013).
